Akanksha works to learn along with and support individuals caught up in life’s unfortunate circumstances who are still eager to live and learn through collaborative initiatives in areas of education, health, livelihoods, culture and ecology especially engaging with the old, the young and women.
Akanksha was born when a group of friends started volunteering on weekends at public hospitals and homes for destitute children and women in Chennai in 1998. Akanksha Public Charitable Trust was created on July 15, 2000 in Chennai, Tamilnadu and registered soon after when some of its volunteers decided to devote more time and energy to Akanksha to make it their primary work.
The organization does not have a head. Khodadad Moradian is currently our Chairman and has more than three decades of experience in business and financial consulting. Dr Oswin Thayal a senior pulmonologist and medical diagnostics entrepreneur is a trustee and was the Chairman of the Trust for a decade since its inception. Prayaag Joshi, currently a teacher and an erstwhile tax advisor is the executive arm of the Board of Trustees. He works full time on the activities of the trust. The three trustees work together in a spirit of camaraderie and determine the work of the trust increasingly in consultation with its many beneficiaries who are still very young people.

From a shy diffident student to a confident student and wannabe teacher in 6 years
Dulaari Netaam who is approximately 14-15 years old today, was a shy and diffident 8 or 9 year old when she joined Imlee Mahuaa School six years ago having dropped out of class 3 of the Government Primary School in Kondagaon village, Kondagaon District, Chhattisgarh 494 226. At that time she was a shy child who could recognize only a few letters of the Devanagari (Hindi) script and the English alphabet. She needed a lot of coaxing to answer simple questions broke into tears when she thought she had made an error in the expectation of a reprimand from her teachers. Dulari took almost four years to believe that the new school that she had entered was where she could really commit as many mistakes as were necessary to learn, that she need not fear reprimand or any punishment for such mistakes and where she enjoyed the freedom to take full charge of her learning. During this period and to date, the School continually instilled confidence in Dulari and all her schoolmates that the School was a place where they could explore and stumble freely without the fear of inviting judgmental or penal consequences and where taking responsibility for one’s learning went hand in hand with such freedom. During the last six years that Dulari has spent in Imlee Mahuaa, she has transformed herself from a diffident and fearful little child to a confident adolescent who while dealing with the difficult challenges of adolescence has immersed herself in every aspect of the school’s program and has for the moment decided to explore teaching as a future career. In October 2013, during a class meeting Dulari expressed her wish to try her hand at teaching the youngest children (3 and 4 year olds) in the School. Since then she has been enjoying teaching them English for two hours every week.
Utter educational uncertainty to a career with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS)
Anita was a soft spoken and eager school going girl when we met her about a decade ago. She was facing a difficult situation that many young girls of her age and background face continually through their lives and especially during their young years – the threat of having to abandon her school and joining her mother in providing domestic services in various households so that she could supplement her inadequate family income. When we heard of this possibility from her mother, we assured her mother that we would stand by her and support her financially through her entire formal education and that of her sister Mahalakshmi and that she should not discontinue their education on any count. Over the last 10 years we built a relationship with the family and ensured the timely payment of the school and college fees of both Anita and her sister Mahalakshmi. Today Mahalakshmi is a school teacher in a school in Chennai having completed her Masters in Arts from a reputed college in Chennai and Anita is a software engineer with Tata Consultancy Services having completed her Bachelors in Engineering from a reputed college in Erode. Both are self-reliant young women who are dealing with life and its battles confidently with the power that education has provided them.
