To Facilitate a Casteless, Classless, Secular, Non-Party, Just and Gender Equal Society
SWEED was initiated in 1989 by a team of women activists. Firstly it concentrated on only 10 villages in Melur block and then extended its work to all 13 blocks in Madurai district. 60 percent of the rural population serviced by SWEED comprised of agriculture labourers, small and marginal farmers. Employment opportunities in these villages were very limited. Education of women remained a distant dream for many. Early marriage and gender exploitation were other problems the people faced. Melur and Kottampatti blocks were high-risk for HIV/AIDS infections
Mrs. Mabel Pushpam is the head of the organization with nearly 28 years experience in women development activities. She began her career in social development as an evangelical worker and as a volunteer activist in Palmyra Workers Development Society in Kanyakumari district in the early 1980s. This rich experiences provided her an opportunity to lend her services to DESA in Melur Taluk in Madurai district. Her training and experience in SIRD, helped her to establish SWEED in 1989.

 Nutrition for an AIDS patient
Mr Raman (name changed) aged about 42 years is infected by HIV/AIDS since 5 years and received medicines from Government hospital for TB & he was also on ART. Due to his low body strength he did not take both drugs at the same time. When he took the medicine he got severe head ache and stomach pain. As a result he used to take only one medicine. This prolonged his illness and he could not recoup his health. We supported Mr.X by providing nutritious food through locally based available food, home based additional food and counseling his mother. Now she gives him Ragi porridge every day as Ragi gives basic strength and power to the nervous system) Before we implement our action plan, Mr.X used to take just one medicine for fear of loss of physical strength and stamina. After we were involved, Mr. X was supported by continuous counseling and emotional supports by our Out Reach Worker (ORW) and now he is ready to take both medicines needed to cope with his health status and also has additional food intake. He is under medication (necessary drugs) and has a medical check-up card at Melur GH. Our Outreach worker has supported him through home visits periodically.
A Stepping Stone For A Bright Future
K. Gayathri is a 14 yr old girl and was staying in an orphanage. She got infected by HIV/AIDS and was taking medicines for it. She was unable to go to school due to lack of support of educational items and teaching materials. She is a clever girl and due to the financial constraints could not pursue her studies. She consequently dropped out of school This donation will help the to continue the educational opportunities and to complete the higher schooling grades of the HIV/AIDS infected and affected orphans, semi orphans children under the age group of 10 to 19 yrs. This supports them to purchase books, notes and tutorials, school fee, uniforms and other educational related expenses. She was in pathetic condition when we took up this case and she was referred by our SHG member and comes under Scheduled caste. We looked in to her case on a priority. Now K. Gayathri who used to frequently absent herself has become a very regular student. After our counseling service, we made some arrangements through our local women SHGs for her school fee and cost of book materials etc., for time being. She joined 8th grade and continued her education at Municipal High School in Melur Taluk, Madurai district. We met AEO and informed about Gayatri. Providing special care and periodical visits by our staffs and tuition arrangements are made and now she is performing well.
