Sponsor a child in an Akanksha run municipal school for one year, INR 25000
 Mail

The Akanksha Foundation works to impact the lives of children from low-income communities, enabling them to maximize their potential and transform their lives. The organization addresses non-formal education through the Akanksha centre and formal education by initiating school reform through The School Project. Kids enrolled in school are from 3.5 years onwards (in 4 schools in Mumbai where they have kindergarten). They have adopted 13 English-medium municipal schools - 9 in Mumbai & 4 in Pune. In 1989, Akanksha began with a simple idea: to give less privileged children a place where they could come and enjoy their childhood. Currently, Akanksha reaches out to over 4,000 children through these two models. With the formal school dropout rate of Akanksha enrolled slum children being under 5%, with 75% of their alumni going to college, the organization is clearly making an impact.

Jayesh Satpute
Jayesh comes from a broken family wherein his mother left him at the age of 2. He lives with his father and paternal grandmother, both of whom are alcoholics and are constantly fighting with each other. There were days when Jayesh came to school without any food, proper uniform and was completely distracted in class. He disobeyed instructions and used to often sleep in class.
At Akanksha, Jayesh received a lot of one on one attention academically as well as personally. He was treated with a lot of love and support from the entire Akanksha staff since that was something he never got at home. Teachers instilled confidence in him and helped him face the challenges and obstacles he faced and continues to face at home.
Jayesh found solace at Sitaram Podar School, managed by Akanksha. He showed a great improvement in his overall behavior. He is calmer and obeys rules. He loves being in school and even stays after school hours and spends time reading and practicing his spoken and written English with the Akanksha staff.
