Tropical Research & Development Centre’s (TRDC) Paryavaran project, which is run in the Western Ghats (Uttara Kannada, Chikkamagalur and Mysore Districts intends to address the issues of climate change by working in collaboration with local farmers. This is done through regeneration, enrichment of plants in deforested areas, promotion of eco-friendly boiling water chulas, enhancement and restoration of wetlands/ water resources, and conservation of wildlife.
How It Works
• Smaller wetlands and ponds on first order streams of the Varada river basin are restored in order to reduce flooding and to enhance the groundwater in the area so as to mitigate drought.
• TRDC’s volunteers keep searching for suitable sites in the project area (which is currently the Uttara Kannada District) and initiate discussions with the local communities on the same.
• Regular water supply assures them of a crop, which translates into income.
• The water bodies also play an important role in managing floods, droughts and other climate related adversaries.
The Statistics
• The rejuvenation of a lake can take up to a month and can benefit 5-10 farmers.
• One of the selection criteria for beneficiaries is that their family net income is less than Rs. 50,000/- a year.
• In the year 2013-14, 8 lakes were developed / rejuvenated benefiting 1500+ people.
