Help runaway children attend a Home Orientation Camp for a month by contributing towards a Fund for the same, INR 2000

Sathi is an NGO that works along with the government Homes and facilitates in reintegrating the child with the family as soon as possible through the Child Welfare Committees (CWCs).

The Basics

The primary objective of the camp is to bring a positive change in the behaviour and perception of children, who are defiant, run away, live on platforms and indulge in repeated use of substances. It is very difficult to motivate them and requires intensive counselling. These children also need to be made aware of the harms of substance use and merits of relationship with family and parents and risks of platform life. Changes in their attitude towards their parents and society help them reunite with their families.

How It Works

• Usually a camp is organized in a secluded, silent place far away from the city with all the basic facilities and arrangements for immediate medical aid and other support in case of untoward incidents.
• Part-time teachers and volunteers are there to assist the staff members.
• Staff members share their observations in the daily review of camp activities and in weekly meetings.
• Regular visits and interactions with professionals are arranged to motivate children and to teach them the negative consequences of platform life and substance use.
• The camps are held once in 3 months.
• The children participating in these camps are either enrolled by their parents or are chosen from government Homes.
• A child having addiction is also brought from the shelters and enrolled into these camps.

• 1:8 – Staff-child ratio
• 4 – Total number of camps held in a year
• 25-30 – Number of children enrolled in the camp
• 120 – Total number of children attending the camps in a year

Addicted children getting a new lease of life.
Mahesh is a 14 yr old boy from Mysore. His father is Venkatesh & is a mason & mother is Shobha . He stole money from home and ran away. He started living in the streets and gradualy got addicted to solution (erazer liquid), sex, smoking. He stayed away from home for one month. Police rescued him and placed him in Govt. Home. Sathi staff contacted him at Govt. Home and selected him for camp.
Initially, Mahesh used to verbally abuse the camp teacher, demanded substances, attempted to escape & disrupted camp activities. With lots of patience & constant interaction we bonded with the child. Meditation & yoga desciplined him. With the help of moral stories & plays he realized the importance of family, education & differentiate between good & bad. He was home placed on 3/3/10.
We did follow up on 24/3/10 and his father informed that the child has shown changes in his behaviour and has abstained from all sort of addiction. There was visible changes in his behaviour. He is more obedient and they are happy. Mahesh will be attending school from the next session.
