Adopt a mother from an urban slum of Maharashtra during her pregnancy, INR 2500

FMCH has been implementing the Urban Nutrition Initiative program at Bhiwandi since 2015 which ensures that women and children who fall within the category of First 1000 Days are linked with their local ICDS (Integrated Child Development Scheme) center, and are able to access services through the same. Lack of proper ante-natal care had visibly emerged amongst other factors surrounding pregnancy health. Several factors were identified as influencers of this behavior, including limited resources, proximity towards the nearest health center and migration which makes many women ‘ineligible’ for services due to absence of documents proving their citizenship.

The Basics

• FMCH works closely with the ICDS system, strengthening the frontline workers towards better implementation of 7 essential nutrition actions as defined by WHO
• FMCH launched the ‘Adopt a Mother’ program which is a unique door-step ante-natal care service through trained frontline workers who use an innovative tool named the Care Mother Kit
• Through the Adopt a Mother Program the frontline workers of FMCH can reach the last corner and conduct 5 crucial tests as part of the ante-natal check-up.
• Tests include blood glucose, hemoglobin, blood pressure, urine test and fetal heart Doppler.
• The workers use a smartphone with an offline app to register and upload individual information of the women which get shared automatically with the local gynecologist, who is responsible for the care of these women.
• The women receive a minimum of 4 check-ups through the 9 months at their doorstep.
• Through this kit, high risk pregnancies can be identified very quickly
• This is a pilot initiative of the Rajmata Jijau Nutrition Mission of Maharashtra to establish proof of the necessity of First 1000 Days intervention through ICDS as a strategy towards prevention of malnutrition, both chronic and acute.
• The services include regular growth monitoring and availability of trusted, accurate information and support from the very first day of their pregnancy and their child till they reach age two.
• Women who are identified as high risk pregnancies (common factors include gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, low weight, anemia) receive additional treatment and care through a local gynecologist.
• The NGO uses an app-based monitoring system (CareMother Software) to collect real-time data of all beneficiaries, activities and disbursals.
