Sponsor wholesome mid-day meal for a child in a Gujarat government school for one year, INR 950

The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF) helps underprivileged children by providing them with a healthy, balanced meal that they would otherwise have to work for. The meal is an incentive for them to continue their education. It helps reduce the dropout rate to an enormous extent and increases classroom attendance.

The Basics

Several underprivileged children in India are out of school and into child labour in order to earn a single meal in a day. The surest way to break this cycle of poverty is through education. Education can significantly improve the quality of life of a family for generations to come. When the basic needs of a child such as food are not met, education often becomes the last priority.

How It Works

• The food is cooked in centralized kitchens at different locations, which meets International Standard Organization (ISO) guidelines.
• The programme is implemented in partnership with the government of India and various State governments.
• Today Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest (not-for-profit) mid-day meal programme serving wholesome food to several school children across different states in India.

• 10 – Number of states where the programme is run
• 10,661 – Number of schools where the programme is run
• 1.4 million – Number of children who are provided with mid-day meals through this programme
• 8.1 million – Number of underprivileged children in India who are into child labour due to lack of basic necessities like food

Food for Education
Kishan is a 12 year old boy who belongs to Saharia community which is one of the most primitive tribes of India and he lives with his parents and other siblings in a remote village in the district of Baran in Rajasthan. His father is a small farmer and the only bread earner of a family of 6. Kishan goes to the government school at Ranwasi, Kishangunj but was never enthusiastic about studies and school and felt tired and non energetic. Caught in the vicious cycle of poverty, illiteracy and hunger, this community has suffered for generations and often came in news for starvation deaths.
The Akshaya Patra school meal, which started a few years back, is reaching out to many schools in the district along with his school. Kishan and all his friends get hot freshly cooked meals everyday during lunch time. The food is cooked by local women and tastes very good.
Kishan feels happy to come to school as he gets tasty food to eat. He also feels energetic and has made good progress in studies lately. He never feels hungry and sleepy in class and can concentrate better in what the teacher explains in class. His parents are motivated to send all their children to school so that they get good nutritious food, continue their education and also remain healthy and strong.
