Sponsor nutritious mid-day meals for two children in a Rajasthan government school for one year, INR 1500

The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF) helps underprivileged children by providing them with a healthy, balanced meal that they would otherwise have to work for. The meal is an incentive for them to continue their education. It helps reduce the dropout rate to an enormous extent and increases classroom attendance.

The Basics

Several underprivileged children in India are out of school and into child labour in order to earn a single meal in a day. The surest way to break this cycle of poverty is through education. Education can significantly improve the quality of life of a family for generations to come. When the basic needs of a child such as food are not met, education often becomes the last priority.

How It Works

• The food is cooked in centralized kitchens at different locations, which meets International Standard Organization (ISO) guidelines.
• The programme is implemented in partnership with the government of India and various State governments.
• Today Akshaya Patra is the world’s largest (not-for-profit) mid-day meal programme serving wholesome food to several school children across different states in India.

• 10 – Number of states where the programme is run
• 10,661 – Number of schools where the programme is run
• 1.4 million – Number of children who are provided with mid-day meals through this programme
• 8.1 million – Number of underprivileged children in India who are into child labour due to lack of basic necessities like food

Food for Education
A Bal Shramik school is a place where victims of child labour are brought to and educated with a lot of recreational activities. Tabassum, a shy girl studys in a  Baal Shramik School and brings her three year-old sister along as well.
The teachers allowed Tabassum to bring her sister along as her parents kept her at home to take care of her sibling when they left for work. Now both of them are fed at school and her parents do not have to worry about their lunch.
Tabassum is glad that Akshaya Patra provides food to children like her who come from economically weaker sections of the society. The Akshaya Patra mid-day meal programme is one of the significant reasons that students like Tabassum have resumed their studies.
