The slums of Jaipur suffer from various socio-economic problems which are intensified by the continued migration of poor families from rural areas. The living conditions, health & sanitation are of abysmally low levels. The slum population also faces a high level of social ills like drug abuse and crime against women. Discrimination against young girls is embedded in the culture and reinforced by poverty. The main barrier is the attitude of poverty-stricken parents who keep them at home watching over siblings or involve them in low skill tasks for minimal income generation. Education broadens horizons, gives skills and transforms young girls into independent young women. Thus Vimukti Sanstha has identified education and vocational training as the means to empower girls from the urban slums of Jaipur.

Free & Safe Vimukti Transport
Komal Khateek is 17 years old and studies in Grade 9 at Vimukti Girls School. She was very young when her father passed away. She has two younger brothers. Her mother is a vegetable seller and she does not earn enough to afford my education expenses. When Komal was in class I in another school which charged fee, her mother decided to discontinue her schooling. Not only was she unable bear the expense of fee but commuting to the school was also a problem.
Her mother came to know through her neighbor that Vimukti provides free education. She brought Komal to the school but had concerns about her commuting. If she was to drop & pick Komal, again the issue of money and time arose and if she was to send her alone-her safety was a big concern. Till then she was not aware that Vimukti also provides free transport hence she was reluctant to admit Komal in the school. She agreed to send Komal to school once she was explained what all facilities Vimukti provides including free transport. Komal joined in class II.
Komal is a regular student, she has made many friends here and wants to become a doctor when she grows up.
