Overview

“Girls Higher Education Support” is part of “Girls Education Support Program” (GESP) run by Swadhar to support needy and deserving girls for their high school education. The categories of students under GESP are: School students, Junior College or vocational course students and Higher Education students.

How It Works

• This donation option will help in supporting vocational/higher education of these girls.
• Apart from the financial support, Swadhar counsellors counsel the students whenever needed.
• They also provide information about various educational courses and scholarships or support available from other sources.
• A committee of volunteers oversees the programme.
• The students are selected from institutions in Pune where girls from low income families study.
• The institution authorities identify the students and Swadhar volunteers conduct interviews for selection.
• A part time social worker makes home visits to their homes.
• She also visits the schools regularly to meet the students.
• The NGO keeps a detailed record of the students including their family background, academic progress and support provided.
• Each student is allotted a unique record number.
• Financial support is given which covers school expenses like fees, books, other educational material, travel to college, and for out of town students for their mess bill and room rent.
• The amount of support given depends on the funds the NGO is able to raise and the students’ needs.
• Fees are reimbursed through cheques to the students.
• From the past few years, Swadhar has been receiving school kits from the organization Seva Sahayog and notebooks from Rotary Club Pune West for the students and these are given at the start of the academic year.

From dependant to a support
After scoring 90 percent in Grade 10, she took admission in the Government Polytechnic College for her diploma in I.T. After first year, she was forced to drop out as she could not afford the costs of living in Pune.
The College Principal directed her to Swadhar. We supported towards her paying her mess bill in her second year and occasional medical bills. In the later part of her final year, we managed to get a donation from a trust for the complete support towards her education including fees, room rent, mess bill and other educational expenses. We also counseled her regularly.
She has completed her education. She is now self-dependent and also is able to support the higher education for her younger brother.
