No child in India shall be deprived of education because of hunger
The Akshaya Patra Foundation came into being in the year 2000 to address two of the most immediate challenges of India - hunger and education by providing unlimited, wholesome food to attract children to schools, retain them and then focus on their holistic development. A one-man initiative, it started with feeding 1500 school children in Bangalore and expanded to over 1 million children in 9 years.
A qualified civil engineer from IIT Mumbai, Shri Madhu Pandit Dasa dedicated himself to the service of humanity by joining ISKCON . A committed missionary, he initiated several social development projects. He is the visionary who initiated the Akshaya Patra program in the year 2000, developing a technology-driven operating model. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Distinguished alumnus award from IIT for his exemplary service to humanity. He states that each persons situation may be different in life, but there is one place where we should have equality, and that is food

 Food for Education
A Bal Shramik school is a place where victims of child labour are brought to and educated with a lot of recreational activities. Tabassum, a shy girl studys in a  Baal Shramik School and brings her three year-old sister along as well.  The teachers allowed Tabassum to bring her sister along as her parents kept her at home to take care of her sibling when they left for work. Now both of them are fed at school and her parents do not have to worry about their lunch. Tabassum is glad that Akshaya Patra provides food to children like her who come from economically weaker sections of the society. The Akshaya Patra mid-day meal programme is one of the significant reasons that students like Tabassum have resumed their studies.

Suchismita is the eldest of three siblings, and the second born is studying at the same school in third standard. Her father runs a tea stall and her mother supplements the meagre income by taking stitching orders. The mid-day meal provided by Akshaya Patra at school is a blessing in disguise to such families. At least two of the children from this family are guaranteed a nutritious meal every day besides acquiring free education. According to teachers, Suchismita is a very attentive student. Her favourite subjects are English and Social Science.

Anjali, Pooja, and Chandu are siblings who study in Government Higher Primary School, Devaiahana Hundi, Mysore, Karnataka. Their parents have separated and their father takes care of them and would not like them to meet their mother. Their brother was transferred from a private school to this school after the separation. Their father went into debt and being alone as well, he could not cook for all of them. Anjali says that they love the food they get at the school because it is a lot like the the way their mother prepared the food.

Kishan is a 12 year old boy who belongs to Saharia community which is one of the most primitive tribes of India and he lives with his parents and other siblings in a remote village in the district of Baran in Rajasthan. His father is a small farmer and the only bread earner of a family of 6. Kishan goes to the government school at Ranwasi, Kishangunj but was never enthusiastic about studies and school and felt tired and non energetic. Caught in the vicious cycle of poverty, illiteracy and hunger, this community has suffered for generations and often came in news for starvation deaths. The Akshaya Patra school meal, which started a few years back, is reaching out to many schools in the district along with his school. Kishan and all his friends get hot freshly cooked meals everyday during lunch time. The food is cooked by local women and tastes very good. Kishan feels happy to come to school as he gets tasty food to eat. He also feels energetic and has made good progress in studies lately. He never feels hungry and sleepy in class and can concentrate better in what the teacher explains in class. His parents are motivated to send all their children to school so that they get good nutritious food, continue their education and also remain healthy and strong.
 Food for Education
There are certain areas in our country where, even today, education is not seen as an important. Seven year old Rohit stays in one such village in Uttar Pradesh. He started coming to school about two years ago only because Akshaya Patra mid-day meal was being served there.  In the beginning he was only interested in the food and did not pay attention in class. However, over a period of time, he started taking interest in his studies. He has been a regular student for the past two years. He can write his name in Hindi and English.
